Synopsis:
The 15 year old students in the Junior High School where I was working in Japan were starting a unit on Black Civil Rights in America in English class. In order to give them a fun and totally different learning experience, I facilitated a participatory video project on the subject. I gave them lessons on story-boarding, camera techniques and basic acting skills, before giving each student in the class a piece of English dialogue to memorise. The result was the creation of a video for each of the three classes, with ninety students in total involved. I then organised a screening for the whole year, so students and teachers could enjoy the productions that the students had put so much work into.
